We are 23,000 Shetlanders and 20,000 Orcadians living in Shetland and Orkney. The capital of Shetland is Lerwick and the capital of Orkney is Kirkwall. Shetland islands: About 100, of which 19 are inhabited. Orcadian islands: 70, out of which 30 are inhabited. We speak English. The local dialects still conserve some Norse vocabulary. About the history of Shetland & Orkney - The Vikings settled in Shetland and Orkney on the 7th century. Know more about the Vikings here. - The Orkney's Sagas relate how during the middle ages their Vikings raided the west of Europe. - In 1472 the isles were incorporated to the kingdom of Scotland and centuries later joined Great Britain. - The Orkney islands were a British naval base during WW I and WW II, and Shetland sheltered many refugees escaping from Norway.
